2023: My Year In Reading

2023: My Year In Reading

This was one of my most disappointing reading years in recent memory, and it has prompted me to reconsider criteria for giving up on a book. Typically if something isn’t working after 40 percent read, I toss it aside. This year, however, I soldiered through a series of unremarkable reads that rarely — if ever — paid off.

Free time is our most valuable commodity, and it shouldn’t be spent with things that aren’t enjoyable. With that said, my only book resolution for 2024 is to not feel guilty about quitting a story that isn’t working.

While I didn’t enter the year with any specific reading goals in mind, efforts to diversify my reading remained intact:

  • 36 percent of authors were not like me, meaning they were non-white, non-cis gendered and not gay males

  • 37 percent of authors read were not white

  • 43 percent of authors were part of the LGBTQIA+ community or disabled

I’ll continue to track these stats, but I want to first and foremost focus on books I want to read versus those I feel like I should read. While reading is a great way to expand your perspectives and challenge prejudices, it also shouldn’t feel like a chore. Follow me on Instagram to see my monthly progress.

Reviews for each of these books can be found on this website. Thanks to Goodreads for, once again, doing the design work for me!
